OMAHA, Nebraska – As Thanksgiving travel nears, Nebraska officials are reminding drivers to prepare vehicles now for winter driving conditions. From Omaha to Lincoln, motorists are being encouraged to take advantage of early November’s mild weather to complete maintenance and stock emergency supplies before snow, ice, and high winds return later this month.

According to the Nebraska Department of Transportation, now is the best time to inspect tires, test batteries, and replace wiper blades before the first major cold snap. Drivers are also advised to carry a winter emergency kit — including a blanket, flashlight, jumper cables, bottled water, snacks, and traction materials such as sand or kitty litter.

Motorists traveling I-80, U.S. 30, and Highway 83 during Thanksgiving week should prepare for heavy traffic and variable weather conditions, especially across open plains. “Winter weather can develop fast in Nebraska, and visibility can drop quickly with wind and snow,” a NDOT spokesperson said. “Prepared drivers are safer drivers when the weather turns.” Officials recommend keeping at least half a tank of gas, dressing warmly, and checking 511.nebraska.gov for live traffic and plow updates.

With the busy travel season ahead, NDOT stresses that early preparation ensures safer, smoother trips across Nebraska’s highways and rural routes as winter driving season begins.
