Lincoln, NE – Nebraska residents should prepare for a return to winter weather this week, as a wintry mix of freezing drizzle and cold temperatures are set to impact the region. After a brief period of mild conditions, colder air will settle in, bringing potential travel disruptions and icy road conditions.
According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley, Monday will start with highs near 50°F in the southeast, while the rest of the state will see temperatures in the mid-30s. By Tuesday, highs will range from 28–35°F, signaling a significant cooldown. A chance of freezing drizzle is expected Wednesday morning, which could lead to slippery roads and dangerous driving conditions across eastern Nebraska.
The National Weather Service has also warned of potential ice jams in river basins, particularly in the Elkhorn and Platte Rivers. Warmer temperatures from the past week have weakened ice formations, increasing the risk of minor flooding as river levels fluctuate. Residents in low-lying areas should stay alert for changing conditions.
By Thursday, highs will remain in the mid-30s, with overnight temperatures dipping into the teens. Friday is expected to bring a slight warming trend, but conditions will remain seasonably cold. Motorists should use caution on roadways like I-80, I-29, and US-77, where freezing precipitation may cause hazardous conditions. Bridges and overpasses will be particularly vulnerable to icing.
Residents should prepare for the midweek weather shift by checking local forecasts, planning extra travel time, and having winter emergency supplies on hand. Stay updated through the National Weather Service and Nebraska Department of Transportation for real-time road conditions and weather alerts.
