HASTINGS, NE — A gray morning sky stretches across the plains, filtering the sun into a pale glow over stubbled fields. The air feels still and cool — the kind of quiet October start that signals the transition between late fall calm and winter’s slow approach.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, today brings mostly cloudy skies with a slight chance of light showers after 10 a.m. Highs reach near 55°F, and a light east wind keeps the air damp and still. While thunder is not expected, a few non-severe showers could pop up across north-central Kansas and south-central Nebraska through midday.

Saturday stays mostly cloudy but mild, with highs climbing to the upper 50s. Winds turn southerly, bringing a bit more warmth and moisture into the area. Sunday will see similar temperatures, though spotty showers may develop late in the day, mainly west of Highway 281 and along I-80.

By Monday, a 40–50% chance of scattered rain returns, possibly enough to dampen the morning commute. Roads may be slick briefly, but heavier rainfall remains unlikely.

Long-range trends hint at a drier, cooler stretch midweek, followed by a modest warm-up heading into Halloween — a welcome shift for trick-or-treaters after this stretch of gray.

For now, south-central Nebraska faces a steady, overcast weekend — calm weather to wrap up October before the next front rolls in.
