GRAND ISLAND, Neb. – A widespread frost will blanket much of central and south-central Nebraska and north-central Kansas through Thursday morning as a strong fall chill settles over the region. Temperatures will dip into the low to mid-30s with light winds, setting up ideal conditions for frost formation both Wednesday and Thursday mornings.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Frost Advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. Wednesday, with another taking hold from midnight tonight through 10 a.m. Thursday. The advisory includes communities such as Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney, Holdrege, York, and Phillipsburg, covering much of the Highway 281 and I-80 corridors.

The NWS warns that unprotected plants and sensitive vegetation may be damaged or killed if left uncovered. Gardeners and growers are urged to cover tender plants, bring potted flowers indoors, and disconnect garden hoses overnight.

Light winds and clear skies will allow temperatures to fall quickly after sunset. Motorists may also notice patchy fog and frost on windshields early Thursday. Conditions should improve by late morning each day as sunshine returns.

According to local emergency management agencies, residents should check space heaters and ensure smoke detectors are working as the region enters its first widespread cold spell of the fall season. Warmer conditions are expected to return by the weekend, but another cold front could arrive early next week.
