Omaha, Nebraska – Bitter cold could grip eastern Nebraska by early Monday as powerful winds and falling temperatures combine to push wind chills as low as -20°F across the Omaha region.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a strong weather system moving through the Plains this weekend will bring gusty winds and periods of snow late Saturday into Sunday, creating minor but widespread travel impacts across eastern Nebraska and western Iowa.
Forecasters say the exact snowfall totals remain uncertain, but strong winds will likely create blowing snow and slick road conditions, particularly along Interstates 80 and 29 and rural highways across the region.
The bigger concern arrives after the storm passes. Cold air rushing in behind the system could cause wind chills to plunge between -10°F and -20°F by Monday morning, especially in open areas north and west of Omaha including Norfolk, Columbus and Fremont.
Such bitter conditions can cause frostbite on exposed skin in a short period of time, particularly during the early morning commute.
Residents should dress in multiple layers, limit time outdoors and check on vulnerable neighbors and pets during the coldest period. Drivers should also keep winter emergency kits in vehicles as cold temperatures settle across the region.
Cold conditions are expected to persist into early next week before temperatures gradually begin to recover later in the week.
