Nebraska – Dry grass crackles in the wind this morning as unseasonably warm air surges into eastern Nebraska, setting the stage for an unusual January Weather shift. Sunshine and mild temperatures arrive fast, but fire danger rises just as quickly before winter weather works its way back into the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha, temperatures climb into the lower 60s today across Omaha and Council Bluffs, more than 30 degrees warmer than early-morning readings. Southwest winds increase through the day, creating elevated to high fire danger, especially across open fields and rural areas. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
Skies stay mostly clear today, making conditions feel more like early spring than January 2026. For now, enjoy the warmth, but stay alert. Gusty winds and dry air can allow fires to spread quickly.
Clouds increase tonight as the next system approaches. Rain develops Thursday morning and becomes widespread through the afternoon. According to the National Weather Service, rainfall may total up to three-quarters of an inch in spots, enough to dampen soils and slow travel along I-80 and I-680 during busy hours.
Temperatures fall Thursday night, allowing rain to briefly mix with snow near daybreak Friday. Little accumulation is expected early, but colder air continues filtering in. Highs settle near 40 Friday with scattered snow chances lingering.
Friday night into Saturday brings a better chance for light snow. Accumulations remain modest, but slushy roads and reduced visibility could affect weekend travel, especially north of Omaha. Plan extra time if driving early Saturday.
Sunday turns colder but brighter. Sunshine returns with highs in the mid-30s, and northwest winds add a winter bite. Early next week trends quieter, with gradual warming by Monday and Tuesday.
