Nebraska’s south central plains wake up under a pale winter sky, with frigid air biting at cheeks in Hastings. Temperatures hover near 9 degrees this morning, and wind chills dip below zero.

Skies stay mostly sunny early, but changes arrive fast.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, highs climb to around 30 degrees this afternoon. Increasing clouds signal an approaching system. Light snow develops later today and continues into tonight. Accumulations range from a trace to just over one inch, with the highest totals near and south of the Tri-Cities area.

Roads may turn slick by late afternoon and evening.

Even minor snow can create trouble when pavement temperatures remain cold. Watch for icy patches on bridges and rural highways, including stretches near Highway 281 and Interstate 80. Winds remain light, generally under 10 mph, limiting blowing snow concerns.

Tonight, temperatures fall to around 15 degrees with a continued 40 percent chance of snow before midnight. Any untreated surfaces could refreeze quickly, raising flash-freeze concerns as moisture locks into place.

Saturday turns mostly sunny and milder, with a high near 40. Saturday night dips to around 15 under clear skies. Sunday stays sunny but cooler, with highs near 33.

Monday rebounds to near 39 with bright skies. By Tuesday, temperatures surge into the 60s, signaling a dramatic warmup. Midweek readings remain well above normal, with highs in the upper 50s to low 60s and only slight rain chances.

Long-range trends point toward sustained above-normal temperatures late next week, offering early spring warmth across Nebraska.
