Hastings, Nebraska – A burst of summer heat will grip central Nebraska through Monday, but thunderstorms Monday night could cool things down quickly by Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service, temperatures in Hastings will peak near 89°F Monday before an 80% chance of thunderstorms hits between 5 p.m. and 1 a.m. Tuesday. Heavy rain and gusty winds are possible, especially along U.S. Highway 6, which could see travel impacts. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary evening travel, secure outdoor items, and charge devices in case of power outages.
On Sunday, expect sunshine through early afternoon, but smoke from Canadian wildfires may reduce air quality. Winds will shift from the northwest to the south by evening, bringing in warmer, hazier air. Monday will be the hottest day of the week, with full sun and rising humidity before storms roll in.
By Tuesday, temps dip to 65°F, a nearly 25-degree drop from Monday. Showers and a few rumbles of thunder may linger, with skies clearing slightly by nightfall. Smoke will remain an intermittent concern.
Looking ahead, the five-day summer preview includes:
- Wednesday (June 4): Mostly cloudy with a high near 70°F; slight rain chances
- Thursday (June 5): A 30% chance of storms, high near 73°F
- Friday: More scattered storms and a high of 78°F
- Saturday: Warmer air returns with partly sunny skies
Expect more summer-like instability next week. Weather alerts remain possible, especially for Tuesday night and Thursday.
