Hastings, Neb. – Thunderstorms could interrupt weekend plans across south central Nebraska, with stronger storms possible Saturday night into Sunday. The unsettled weather pattern is expected to linger into midweek.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a few non-severe thunderstorms may pass through overnight Thursday, but the main storm threat develops late Saturday. Forecasters say some storms Saturday evening into Sunday night could reach strong levels, bringing brief downpours, gusty winds, and lightning. Additional rounds of storms are possible Tuesday into Wednesday, adding to the unsettled stretch.
Communities including Kearney, Grand Island, Hastings, and York should prepare for periods of rain that could slow travel on major roadways such as I-80 and U.S. Highway 281. While widespread severe weather isn’t anticipated, isolated stronger cells could still cause power flickers and ponding on rural roads.
Residents are encouraged to keep devices charged in case of brief outages and use caution while driving during downpours, especially at night. Outdoor events Saturday evening and Sunday may face delays or cancellations if storms develop.
The storm chances continue through Wednesday, when drier and cooler air is expected to return to the region.
