HASTINGS, Neb. – Drivers across south-central Nebraska could face dangerous conditions Sunday as strong thunderstorms push into the region with damaging winds and hail. Travel on Highways 183 and 81 may become hazardous during the afternoon and evening as storms intensify.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, scattered thunderstorms are expected Sunday, with some capable of producing winds up to 60 mph and hail the size of quarters. The greatest threat covers western and central counties, where isolated severe storms could develop late in the day.
Residents in Hastings, Kearney, Grand Island, and surrounding communities should prepare for power outages and brief flooding on rural roads. Emergency officials urge drivers to avoid travel during heavy downpours and keep phones charged in case of outages. Outdoor events may be disrupted as storms arrive.
While Monday looks calmer with sunshine and highs in the mid-80s, additional storm chances return Tuesday through Friday. Each day carries at least a 20–40% chance of showers or thunderstorms, keeping conditions unsettled across the region. Gusty winds and localized flooding may continue to pose problems through midweek.
Storm risks remain highest during the evening hours, and the Weather Service advises residents to monitor alerts for updates as conditions change quickly.
