Hastings, Nebraska – Strong thunderstorms are set to impact western and central Nebraska late Saturday, especially west of Highway 281, with the highest risk between 4 p.m. and 2 a.m. Sunday.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a few severe storms could form after 4 p.m., developing over the western counties and pushing eastward through the night. Areas along and west of Grand Island—including Kearney, North Platte, Lexington, and Holdrege—face the greatest threat for damaging wind gusts near 60 mph, quarter-size hail, and a low tornado risk. Travel on Interstate 80 and Highway 281 may be hazardous during peak storm hours.

The primary risk window spans from late afternoon through the early overnight period. Localized flooding is possible in low-lying areas, and brief power outages may occur. Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, stay weather aware, and have mobile alerts enabled. If driving, avoid flooded roads and pull over if severe weather approaches.

This is the region’s highest severe weather threat so far in July, similar to recent summer outbreaks. More updates and possible warnings could be issued this evening as storms develop and track east.

Warnings remain in effect through 2 a.m. Sunday. Stay tuned for updates from the National Weather Service Hastings.
