Hastings, Nebraska – Strong thunderstorms are set to sweep through much of Nebraska Wednesday afternoon and evening, threatening damaging wind gusts and hail that could disrupt travel and daily routines.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a marginal to slight risk for severe thunderstorms will develop between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m. Wednesday, primarily affecting central and northern Nebraska. Forecasters warn that wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail are possible, especially in areas from Hastings to Norfolk and Grand Island. The highest local risk stretches north of Kearney, where residents should prepare for rapid changes in weather conditions and localized damage.

Roads including U.S. Highway 281 and segments of Interstate 80 may see hazardous driving due to sudden downpours and strong winds. Emergency management agencies urge residents to secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during storms, and keep mobile devices charged in case of power outages. While the risk of tornadoes and flooding remains low, any severe storm could still cause brief disruptions or damage.

The severe weather window is expected to close by 11 p.m. Wednesday, but additional updates or alerts could be issued if storms linger or intensify.
