Hastings, Nebraska – One more scorching day gives way to relief as severe thunderstorms and a sharp cool-down arrive Tuesday evening across central and south-central Nebraska. Residents from Hastings to Kearney should prepare for strong storms, heavy rain, and a 15-degree drop in temperatures by Wednesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Slight Risk for severe thunderstorms is in effect for Tuesday night from 7 p.m. to 2 a.m. Damaging straight-line winds over 60 MPH and localized rainfall up to two inches are possible, with a lesser chance of hail. Power outages and flooded roadways may affect areas along highways like I-80 and US-281.
Tuesday will bring one last blast of 90°–100° heat and stifling humidity before temperatures fall to the upper 70s and mid-80s Wednesday. While northern counties may feel some cooling earlier, most of the region should expect storm activity in the evening and into the overnight hours. Emergency managers urge residents to secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during the storm window.
Winds will shift north by Wednesday, keeping daytime highs well below recent readings. Scattered showers may linger, but most of the area will trend drier. More advisories may follow if storm damage or flooding occurs.
