Hastings, Neb. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to develop across much of central Nebraska Friday evening, with damaging winds and hail posing the greatest threats to communities. Storm activity is most likely between 4 p.m. and 11 p.m., when conditions could support gusts near 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, showers and weak storms may pass through earlier in the day but are not expected to be severe. The stronger storms are expected to arrive later this afternoon and into the overnight hours, with isolated to scattered coverage across the region.

Cities including Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, and York could see the brunt of the activity during the evening commute and into the late-night hours. The main hazards will be strong winds capable of downing tree limbs and power lines, along with hail that may cause damage to vehicles and crops. Flooding is not expected, though brief heavy rainfall is possible.

Residents are advised to secure outdoor items, charge devices in case of power outages, and limit travel if storms intensify quickly.

Warnings may be issued later tonight as storms develop, with the severe threat lingering until late evening.
