Hastings, Neb. – Severe thunderstorms and dangerous heat remain top concerns across south-central Nebraska and parts of north-central Kansas through early Tuesday, with risks extending into the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, isolated to scattered storms will continue overnight, especially along and south of Interstate 80. A few could turn severe, producing wind gusts over 60 mph, quarter-sized hail, and heavy downpours through 3 a.m. Tuesday.

By Tuesday afternoon, heat index values will climb back near 100 degrees in areas including Grand Island, Kearney, and Hastings, creating hazardous conditions for outdoor activity. Spotty thunderstorms are possible again Tuesday evening into Tuesday night.

Travelers along I-80 and Highway 281 should prepare for sudden changes in visibility, slick roads, and strong crosswinds. Emergency managers urge residents to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged time outdoors during peak heat, and keep devices charged in case of power outages from storms.

The storm threat remains intermittent midweek, with more widespread thunderstorm chances expected late week and into the weekend. Spotters are asked to report hail, wind gusts above 50 mph, or localized flooding to the National Weather Service.
