Hastings, Neb. – Severe thunderstorms are expected to slam parts of Nebraska between 8 p.m. Monday and 2 a.m. Tuesday, with the greatest risk for large hail and damaging winds centered around Grand Island, Kearney, and Hastings.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, an enhanced risk (Level 3 out of 5) covers central portions of the state where isolated tornadoes, hail up to golf ball size, and wind gusts reaching 70 mph could develop. Areas in the slight to marginal zones—including Lincoln and McCook—should still prepare for strong storms but with reduced threat levels.

Communities along I-80, especially from Lexington to York, should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and avoid travel during the peak window. Emergency alerts may be issued with little notice as storms intensify overnight.

This is Nebraska’s most significant severe weather threat so far this July, and storm activity may linger into early Tuesday morning. Tonight’s storms could down power lines, damage vehicles, and cause brief flooding in low-lying areas.

Warnings remain in effect through early Tuesday, and additional watches may be issued by evening.
