Hastings, Nebraska – Thunderstorms are rapidly developing across south central Nebraska this evening, threatening to bring damaging wind gusts near 70 mph and heavy rainfall totals of 2 to 4 inches from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. Wednesday. Residents should brace for local flooding and possible power outages as intense storms move through the area.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the highest risk covers south central Nebraska—including Adams, Buffalo, and Kearney counties—as well as north central Kansas, where a complex of storms is forecast to intensify tonight. Strong winds remain the primary hazard, but localized flash flooding is possible, especially in low-lying or poorly drained spots. Hail up to the size of quarters may also accompany these storms.

Highways such as I-80 and US-281 could see hazardous travel conditions due to sudden downpours, debris, and standing water. Emergency officials urge residents to avoid non-essential travel, secure outdoor items, and keep phones charged in case of outages. Motorists should never drive through flooded roads.

This is the region’s highest severe weather risk so far this month, similar to last July’s damaging wind event. The threat will linger through early Wednesday morning, and further advisories may be issued if storms redevelop.
