Hastings, Neb. – Drivers in central Nebraska should prepare for dangerous travel Saturday evening as thunderstorms bring hail, gusty winds, and heavy rain. The National Weather Service warns that storms could rapidly intensify between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m., especially along Highway 183, making roads slick and reducing visibility. Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel during the peak threat.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, storms will sweep in from the west Saturday afternoon, carrying the risk of winds up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail. Patchy fog and drizzle may already slow drivers Friday morning before the stronger storms develop. Emergency officials advise keeping phones charged and having a plan in case of power outages.

Showers remain likely into Saturday night, with additional rounds of thunderstorms expected through Labor Day. Rainfall totals may reach up to an inch or more in stronger storms. Sunday and Monday bring more scattered thunder chances before conditions improve early next week.

Outdoor plans, including parades and barbecues for the holiday weekend, may be interrupted by sudden downpours. Anyone attending events is urged to monitor local alerts and have shelter options ready. Strong winds could also down small branches and create localized power disruptions.

Warnings remain in place for south-central Nebraska and portions of north-central Kansas through early next week. Stay tuned for additional advisories as conditions develop.
