Hastings, Nebraska – A multi-day stretch of unsettled winter weather is setting up across much of Nebraska, with rain changing to snow beginning Thursday and continuing in several rounds through Saturday, raising concerns for slick roads and intermittent travel impacts.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, precipitation will begin as rain on Thursday before colder air allows a transition to snow. Snow is possible in up to three separate rounds from Thursday through Saturday, though confidence in exact snowfall totals remains low due to small shifts in storm track and temperature profiles.
Most locations that see snow are expected to pick up a trace to around 1 or 2 inches overall. However, isolated areas could receive higher totals of 3 to 4 inches, particularly where snow bands persist longer. Portions of south-central and eastern Nebraska, including Hastings, Grand Island, Kearney, York, and Aurora, fall within the zone where at least light accumulation is possible.
Even minor snowfall could create slick spots on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses, especially during colder overnight and early morning periods. Drivers should be prepared for changing conditions, particularly during times when rain switches to snow.
Forecasters stress that snowfall amounts and timing may change as the system evolves. Additional updates or advisories may be issued later this week, and residents are encouraged to monitor the latest statements and use caution when traveling through Saturday.
