Hastings, Nebraska – One more mild January day will give central and south-central Nebraska a brief break before a shifting pattern introduces rain, possible snow, and growing travel concerns by Thursday afternoon and evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, Wednesday will feature abundant sunshine and widespread highs in the 60s across much of the region, driven by southwest winds. Conditions begin to change Thursday as a broad shield of rain spreads in from the southwest, overspreading much of Nebraska during the day.

As colder air works in Thursday afternoon and evening, rain may transition to wet snow, especially across the northwest half of the forecast area. Areas north and west of the Tri-Cities, including parts of Dawson, Buffalo, and Valley counties, could see snow rates heavy enough to create slick roads and reduced visibility. Current probabilities suggest a 30 to 50 percent chance of at least one inch of snow in portions of central Nebraska, though confidence in exact placement remains limited.

Friday brings another potential round of snow, along with noticeably colder temperatures, particularly southeast of the Tri-Cities. While impacts are still uncertain, officials urge drivers to monitor updates closely and be prepared for changing road conditions.

Additional advisories may be issued as the system evolves, with the highest concern window stretching from Thursday afternoon through Friday.
