Hastings, Nebraska – Scattered storms packing up to 60 mph wind gusts and quarter-size hail could sweep across central Nebraska Friday night, prompting a heightened severe weather risk for areas west of Kearney and McCook.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the main window for stronger storms runs from 8 p.m. Friday through 4 a.m. Saturday, with higher chances than Thursday night. A “Slight Risk” level (Level 2 of 5) has been issued for much of western and southwestern Nebraska, including Cozad, North Platte, and Curtis.

Though storms Thursday night remain isolated and are not expected to reach severe thresholds, Friday night’s system has the potential to produce damaging winds and hail, especially along and west of U.S. Highway 83 and I-80. Cities like Franklin, Norton, and Holdrege sit near the edge of the stronger activity zone.

Residents in these areas should secure loose outdoor items, park vehicles under cover, and stay weather-aware through the evening hours. Power outages are possible where gusts peak.

More storm updates are expected Friday afternoon. Alerts may be upgraded depending on storm development.
