Omaha, NE – Dangerous travel conditions could develop across parts of eastern Nebraska and western Iowa Sunday afternoon and evening as strong winds combine with snow to create near-blizzard conditions, according to the National Weather Service in Omaha.

A Winter Storm Watch and High Wind Watch have been issued for portions of the region as a powerful weather system moves through.

Forecasters say snowfall totals of 2 to 4 inches are most likely across northeast Nebraska into west-central Iowa, including areas near Norfolk, Sioux City, and surrounding communities.

While snowfall totals may not be extremely high, very strong winds of 55 to 65 mph could create periodic whiteout conditions, making travel hazardous or even dangerous at times Sunday afternoon into the evening.

Drivers along major routes including Interstate 29, Interstate 80, and Highway 75 could encounter rapidly changing visibility due to blowing and drifting snow.

The powerful winds may also lead to isolated to scattered power outages, especially where blowing snow and ice accumulate on power lines.

Behind the storm system, much colder air will move into the region. By Monday morning, wind chills could drop between -10°F and -20°F, creating dangerous conditions for anyone outdoors.

Officials advise residents to consider adjusting travel plans Sunday and to monitor weather updates as the storm approaches.
