Hastings, NE – Travelers heading across central Nebraska for Thanksgiving will see mostly manageable weather through the holiday, but forecasters warn that Saturday remains the day to watch, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Hastings.
According to the NWS, today and Thanksgiving Day should be quiet, with partly cloudy skies and highs ranging from the upper 30s to upper 40s. A few sprinkles or flurries may develop today, but no significant travel impacts are expected. Overnight lows will dip into the teens and 20s through Thursday morning.
The pattern changes heading into Friday and Saturday as a colder air mass moves into the region. Friday brings breezy conditions with a slight chance of flurries and daytime highs in the mid-30s to upper 40s. Winds strengthen Saturday, and forecasters say travelers should be prepared for light snow, strong northwest winds, and periods of reduced visibility. Highs will only reach the upper 20s to lower 40s, and slick spots are possible on area highways, especially early and late in the day.
Wind chills will drop sharply behind the system. By Sunday morning, “feels-like” temperatures may fall near zero, with daytime highs ranging from the mid-20s to upper 20s. A low-end chance for additional light snow continues into Sunday.
The NWS encourages holiday travelers to monitor updated forecasts, especially anyone driving long distances on Saturday when blowing snow and gusty winds could create intermittent hazards.
More detailed travel and short-range forecasts are expected as the holiday weekend continues.
