Hastings, Neb. – Temperatures across central Nebraska soared into the 90s Monday, with heat index values climbing as high as 105 degrees. Residents could also see strong to severe thunderstorms develop late Monday evening into overnight, bringing the potential for gusty winds and heavy rainfall.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the region will remain mostly dry and hot through the afternoon before storm chances increase tonight. Winds will remain light, around 10 mph, but shifting directions may help fuel scattered storm development across the area.

Cities including Grand Island, Kearney, and Hastings should prepare for possible evening storm impacts, especially along highways where reduced visibility and slick roads could slow travel. Emergency officials urge residents to stay weather aware, limit outdoor activity during peak afternoon heat, and secure outdoor items ahead of strong winds.

Temperatures will trend closer to seasonal averages by midweek, with highs in the upper 80s and drier conditions returning Wednesday and Thursday.

More storms remain possible late Tuesday, but the heat risk eases after Monday night. Additional weather updates may be issued if severe storms develop.
