HASTINGS, Neb. – Dangerous heat and evening storms could disrupt much of Nebraska as the week begins, with temperatures soaring into the upper 90s and heat index values pushing near 100 through Tuesday. Thunderstorms developing during the evening and overnight hours may turn strong to marginally severe, especially west of Highway 281.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, isolated storms are possible Sunday evening with the greatest risk after sunset. Strong winds up to 30 mph could accompany the storms, while daytime highs will range from 92 to 98 degrees. On Monday, partly cloudy skies will allow highs to climb near 97 before more storms redevelop Monday night.

By Tuesday, a slight cool-down arrives, with highs between 87 and 94. However, scattered afternoon and evening thunderstorms remain in the forecast, fueled by continued humidity and shifting east winds. Residents are advised to avoid strenuous outdoor activity during peak afternoon hours and to secure loose outdoor items ahead of gusty storms.

The NWS warns that additional advisories may be issued if storms intensify. Weather conditions are expected to remain unsettled through midweek.
