Omaha, NE – A round of potentially severe thunderstorms is forecast to impact much of Nebraska beginning Friday evening and continuing through Saturday, bringing the threat of 1-inch hail and wind gusts up to 60 mph.
According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley, the greatest risk of storms begins Friday, March 28, between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m., with more widespread thunderstorm activity expected Saturday afternoon and evening. Areas under the highest local risk include Omaha, Lincoln, Norfolk, and surrounding southeastern and eastern counties.
Storms may develop along a strong temperature gradient and are fueled by warm, moist air, though confidence in timing and intensity varies, especially for Saturday. An elevated warm layer, or “cap,” could delay storm development until late evening Saturday, when the atmosphere becomes more unstable.
While tornadoes are currently considered unlikely, residents should remain alert for updated forecasts. The primary concerns remain damaging wind gusts and hailstones up to one inch in diameter.
Those with outdoor plans are advised to have multiple ways to receive warnings. Keep mobile devices charged and remain indoors during thunderstorm activity. Drivers should exercise caution as high winds and hail may reduce visibility and damage vehicles.
