Wayne, Nebraska – Residents across northeast Nebraska should stay alert this afternoon as weather conditions could produce weak but visible funnel clouds through 5 p.m. Wednesday.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a humid and unstable air mass is supporting the potential for brief, harmless funnel clouds over Knox, Cedar, Thurston, Antelope, Pierce, and Wayne counties. These funnels rarely touch down, but if they do, they can bring wind gusts exceeding 50 mph and minor damage.

Communities such as Creighton, Laurel, Plainview, and Winnebago may notice narrow, spinning clouds descending from the sky. While these funnels aren’t typically dangerous, officials urge people to move indoors if one is spotted. The public is encouraged to report any sightings directly to the National Weather Service.

This type of weather event is most common during summer months when light wind shear and moisture create ideal spin-up conditions.

No tornado warnings are in effect as of early Wednesday afternoon, but residents should stay weather-aware in case stronger storms develop later in the day.
