Omaha, NE – Drivers across Nebraska are waking up to dangerous flash freeze conditions this Sunday morning as temperatures drop sharply behind Saturday’s snow system. According to the National Weather Service, wet and slushy roads could freeze within minutes, forming invisible black ice on major routes including I-80, Highway 75, and I-680.

A flash freeze happens when pavement temperatures rapidly fall below freezing, instantly turning moisture into ice. Even when skies clear, roads can remain dangerously slick — especially on bridges, overpasses, and shaded areas.

Experts warn that on icy surfaces, a car traveling 35 mph may require up to 600 feet to stop, compared with only 60–100 feet on dry roads. Motorists are urged to slow down, avoid cruise control, and allow extra following distance.

“Conditions can go from wet to icy in just a few minutes,” the NWS cautioned in a Sunday update. “Drivers should plan for black ice through midmorning.”

Motorists across Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy Counties should expect slick conditions until sunlight and road treatments begin to take effect later in the morning.
