Hastings, NE – Strong north winds and dry air will combine Thursday afternoon to create dangerous fire conditions across central and south-central Nebraska, where any spark could spread rapidly.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from midday through early evening for counties south and southeast of Grand Island, including areas near Hastings, Hebron, Superior, and Smith Center. Forecasters say winds will increase behind a cold front, with sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts approaching 40 mph.
Humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 20 to 30 percent, especially across the southern tier of the state. This combination of gusty winds and dry air creates an environment where fires can ignite easily and grow quickly, particularly along open fields and near roadways like Highway 281 and Interstate 80 corridors.
Even areas outside the watch zone, including Kearney and Ord, will see elevated fire danger due to widespread gusty conditions. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents should avoid activities that could produce sparks, including equipment use or dragging chains.
Conditions will gradually improve after sunset as humidity rises and winds ease, but officials warn the watch could be upgraded if conditions worsen.
