Grand Island, NE – Residents across central and eastern Nebraska are being urged to stay alert as two major weather events unfold. A dense fog advisory remains in effect until 10 a.m. this morning, reducing visibility to a quarter-mile or less, making travel hazardous. Drivers should exercise caution, use headlights, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. This dense fog impacts cities like Grand Island, Hastings, Kearney, and York, where conditions could be particularly dangerous through the morning commute.
According to the National Weather Service, the fog is expected to dissipate by mid-morning, but a more serious weather event is on the horizon. Starting Sunday afternoon, the region will experience an Extreme Heat Watch, lasting through Sunday evening. Heat index values are expected to reach up to 110°F, creating dangerously hot conditions. Cities including Grand Island, Kearney, Hastings, and York are among those that could be hardest hit.
During the heat wave, the risk of heat-related illnesses significantly increases, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions. The National Weather Service recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying in air-conditioned spaces, and limiting time outdoors. Additionally, checking on neighbors and loved ones is advised.
Residents of counties including Buffalo, Hall, York, and Adams should also prepare for extreme heat as the watch extends across the central part of the state.
What’s Next: The extreme heat watch remains in effect from Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening. Keep an eye out for further updates as conditions develop.
