Hastings, Nebraska – South-central Nebraska faces a dangerous weather combination Thursday, July 24, as extreme heat and severe storms push into the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, heat index values will climb to 104°F Thursday afternoon, especially east of Highway 281. Thunderstorms are expected to follow late Thursday night into early Friday, with quarter-sized hail, 60 mph winds, and isolated flooding possible.

Drivers should avoid low-lying roads and prepare for sudden downpours, especially during evening travel. If your area floods, turn around — don’t drive through. Strong winds could down tree limbs and disrupt power in parts of Adams, Hall, and Clay Counties.

A second wave of storms could linger into Friday, though chances decrease through the day. The bigger issue becomes the heat. By Sunday and Monday, July 27-28, heat indices could soar past 110°F in several eastern counties.

Saturday is expected to be the hottest day of the stretch in Hastings, with sunny skies and highs near 98°F. No storms are expected. Sunday will stay hot and mostly dry, before temps settle back slightly by Tuesday.
