Hastings, Neb. – Scorching heat and storm chances will keep south central Nebraska on alert through early week, with the worst conditions arriving Monday afternoon into Monday night. Heat index values are expected to soar into the 100–104 degree range, and severe thunderstorms could roll in by evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, the greatest storm threat will develop late Monday into early Tuesday, with strong winds near 60 mph and hail up to the size of quarters possible. Counties east of Highway 281 could feel the brunt of both the extreme heat and severe weather.

Overnight into Monday morning, only a few spotty showers are expected along and north of Interstate 80, but conditions will quickly intensify as the day heats up. The combination of hot, humid air and incoming storm energy may lead to scattered power outages, tree damage, and dangerous driving conditions on Highways 6, 34, and Interstate 80.

Residents are urged to avoid strenuous activity during peak afternoon hours and limit unnecessary travel Monday evening when storms are most likely. Spotters are encouraged to report hail, damaging winds, or localized flooding.

Storm chances linger into Tuesday night, with a brief break midweek before another round of storms arrives late Thursday into Saturday.
