Omaha, Nebraska – A scorching Sunday will bring heat index values up to 107°F across eastern Nebraska, with dangerous wind gusts and a rising threat of severe storms and flooding early next week.

According to the National Weather Service Omaha/Valley, a Heat Advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, with actual air temperatures between 95°F and 102°F. Strong south winds of 35 to 45 mph will worsen the impact, creating challenging conditions for outdoor workers and those without reliable air conditioning. The heat risk is classified as major to extreme for much of eastern Nebraska, including Omaha, Lincoln, and Norfolk.

A cold front moving in late Sunday will increase the chance of thunderstorms overnight, with severe weather possible through Tuesday. Large hail and damaging winds are the main concerns, especially Monday and Tuesday in northeast and central Nebraska.

By Monday, the focus shifts to flooding. The Weather Prediction Center has outlined an elevated flood risk due to repeated rounds of thunderstorms through Wednesday, particularly in areas like Columbus, Fremont, and Grand Island that may receive several inches of rain.

Residents are urged to stay hydrated, avoid peak afternoon sun, and prepare for flash flooding by securing belongings and staying off flooded roads.

Warnings remain in effect through midweek. Additional advisories may be issued as the situation evolves.
