Nebraska – The air bites the moment you step outside, sharp enough to sting exposed skin and freeze wet pavement fast. Across south-central Nebraska, winter is tightening its grip, and conditions are lining up for dangerous cold, slick roads, and periodic snow that could complicate travel through the weekend and into early next week.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Cold Weather Advisory remains in effect as wind chills plunge between 15 and 25 degrees below zero at times. Gusty north winds are stripping away warmth, increasing the risk of frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. Temperatures stay well below freezing even during the warmest part of the day.
In Hastings and surrounding communities, light snow chances increase at times Friday into Saturday. While accumulations look modest, even a dusting can create problems. Snow melting during brief daylight warming may refreeze quickly after sunset, setting up flash-freeze conditions on untreated roads, bridges, and parking lots. Drivers along Highway 281 and nearby county roads should plan extra time and slow down.
The cold stretches beyond Nebraska. Arctic air spills across the Plains and Midwest, while a larger winter system spreads snow, sleet, and ice farther south and east. Power demand remains high, and officials urge residents to limit time outdoors, dress in layers, and ensure pets and livestock have warm shelter and unfrozen water.
Conditions stay cold into early Monday before a gradual moderation begins. Additional advisories are possible if snow coverage expands or winds strengthen.
