Hastings, Nebraska – Strong southwest winds and critically dry air are creating dangerous fire conditions across eastern Nebraska today, with a Red Flag Warning in effect until 8 p.m. Monday. Gusts up to 40 mph could lead to rapid fire spread, especially in areas along and north of Highway 92.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, lingering morning showers will quickly clear, leaving behind sunny skies and highs in the upper 70s to mid-80s. Southwest winds will blow steadily at 15–25 mph, with peak gusts between 30–40 mph, increasing the fire threat through the evening.

Drivers along Highway 92 should remain alert for sudden changes in visibility due to blowing dust and smoke. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged, and residents are urged to secure loose objects and avoid any activities that could spark fires. A cold front is expected to push through tonight, shifting winds to the northwest and lowering temperatures into the 30s and 40s.

The Red Flag Warning will expire at 8 p.m., but gusty conditions may persist into the evening. More weather updates, including a return of storm chances Tuesday night, are expected later today.
