Omaha, NE – Nebraska is bracing for a bitter stretch of Arctic air as a strong Arctic Blast spreads across the Central Plains from Monday, Dec. 1 through Friday, Dec. 5, delivering a harsh Cold December pattern with snow showers, single-digit temperatures, and dangerous subzero wind chills.
According to the National Weather Service, multiple waves of Arctic energy will bring light snow and areas of blowing snow, especially Monday through Wednesday. Snowfall totals should remain light, but gusty northwest winds may create reduced visibility and drifted roadways, particularly across open stretches of central and western Nebraska.
Temperatures are expected to drop into the single digits during the coldest nights, with below-zero readings possible in northern and central portions of the state. Wind chills may plunge between –10°F and –25°F, creating hazardous conditions for anyone outdoors for extended periods.
NOAA’s 6–10 Day Temperature Outlook places Nebraska in a strong below-normal temperature zone for Dec. 1–5, reflecting the depth of the Arctic air mass anchoring across the region. Additional flurries or light snow may develop midweek as reinforcing cold fronts sweep southward.
While no major winter storm is currently in the forecast, the combination of subzero wind chills, patchy snow, and blowing snow may lead to hazardous travel conditions throughout the week. Drivers should use caution and monitor updates from the National Weather Service.
