Hastings, NE – A rapid and intense warmup is pushing central and south-central Nebraska toward record-breaking heat, with temperatures climbing into the 90s by Friday afternoon and peaking near 95 degrees Saturday.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, highs will reach the low 80s Thursday before surging to around 91 degrees Friday across cities including Grand Island, Hastings, and Kearney. By Saturday, temperatures are expected to climb even higher, with Cambridge potentially reaching 95 degrees and multiple locations nearing or exceeding long-standing March records.
Across the region, Lexington, Holdrege, and Aurora will all see widespread 90-degree heat, running 25 to 30 degrees above seasonal averages. This level of warmth is highly unusual for March and may challenge the warmest March day ever recorded in some areas.
Dry conditions will persist alongside the heat, increasing the risk of grass fires, especially in open rural areas. Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning and remain cautious with any ignition sources.
A cooler pattern begins Sunday, with temperatures dropping back into the 60s and 70s early next week. Additional updates are expected as record highs approach.
