Hastings, Nebraska – Temperatures are climbing rapidly across central Nebraska, with highs nearing 90°F by Saturday afternoon, putting long-standing March records at risk and increasing fire danger within the next 48 hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a stretch of unseasonably warm air will push highs from the upper 70s and low 80s Wednesday into the upper 80s and low 90s by Saturday. Forecasters note this could challenge or break the all-time March record as southwest winds increase to 15 to 25 mph.
Hastings is expected to reach between 80°F and 87°F Friday before surging to 86°F to 93°F Saturday. Grand Island, Kearney, and Holdrege will see similar conditions, with warm, dry air spreading across the Platte River Valley. Winds shifting from northwest to southwest will further dry fuels, elevating wildfire risk along Highways 6, 34, and Interstate 80.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure equipment that could spark, and stay hydrated during peak heat between noon and 5 p.m. Farmers and ranchers should monitor field conditions closely as dry soils and gusty winds increase fire potential.
The warm pattern holds through Saturday evening before a cooldown begins late in the weekend. Additional fire weather alerts or record reports may be issued as temperatures peak.
