Omaha, NE – Heavy snow and 35 mph wind gusts could quickly cover highways across Boone and Platte counties by 6 a.m. Thursday, threatening both the morning and evening commutes before conditions ease at midnight.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Winter Storm Warning remains in effect from 6 a.m. to midnight CST for Boone and Platte counties, including Albion, St. Edward and Columbus. Forecasters expect 4 to 7 inches of snow, with strong northwest winds creating areas of blowing snow and sharply reduced visibility.

Snow will intensify during the morning hours, leading to snow-packed roads on Highway 81, Highway 30 and rural county routes. Gusts up to 35 mph may push visibility below a half mile at times, especially in open fields where drifting develops quickly.

Columbus and surrounding communities could see rapid accumulation during heavier bursts, making untreated roads slick and increasing the risk of slide-offs. Rural stretches may become difficult to navigate as wind-driven snow crosses roadways.

Drivers should delay nonessential travel if possible. If you must head out, slow down, keep headlights on and carry emergency supplies including water, food and a charged phone. Nebraska road conditions are available by calling 511.

Snow tapers late tonight, but drifting may continue even after snowfall ends. Additional updates are possible if winds remain strong into early Friday.
