Omaha, Nebraska – Powerful wind gusts up to 65 mph could turn light snowfall into dangerous travel conditions across eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa beginning early Sunday morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 7 a.m. until 9 p.m. Sunday for much of eastern Nebraska and southwest Iowa. Snowfall totals will remain relatively light—generally up to 1 inch in southeast Nebraska and up to 2 inches across northeast Nebraska and western Iowa—but winds gusting to 65 mph will create blowing snow and rapidly changing visibility.
Communities including Omaha, Lincoln, Bellevue, Papillion, Fremont, Columbus, Norfolk, Council Bluffs, and Red Oak may see brief whiteout conditions where wind-driven snow drops visibility below a quarter mile.
Major travel routes such as Interstate 80, Interstate 29, U.S. Highway 75, and Highway 30 could experience drifting snow and slick patches, particularly on bridges and open rural stretches exposed to strong winds.
Utility crews are also monitoring the potential for isolated power outages as strong wind gusts strain tree limbs and power lines.
Officials urge drivers to slow down, keep extra distance between vehicles, and check Nebraska and Iowa 511 road reports before traveling Sunday. Wind-driven snow and hazardous travel conditions may persist through Sunday evening before gradually improving overnight.
