York, Nebraska – Powerful winds sweeping across Nebraska could create dangerous travel conditions Sunday as snow and blowing snow reduce visibility across central and northern parts of the state.

According to the National Weather Service offices in Hastings and North Platte, Winter Weather Advisories are in effect across much of central and north-central Nebraska through 7 p.m. Sunday. Snowfall totals will remain relatively light in many areas, generally between a half inch and 1 inch in central Nebraska, but northwest winds sustained between 30 and 45 mph with gusts up to 65 mph could create hazardous driving conditions.

Communities including York, Aurora, Central City, Ord, St. Paul, Genoa, and Stromsburg may see slick bridges and overpasses beginning around 7 a.m. Sunday as light snow moves through. Even minimal snowfall could blow across roadways and briefly reduce visibility below one mile.

Farther north in counties including Cherry, Brown, Rock, Sheridan, Blaine, and Wheeler, snowfall totals could reach up to 3 inches while wind gusts approach 60 mph, producing drifting snow across open rural highways.

Drivers along Highway 81, Highway 281, and Highway 30, as well as rural routes across the Sandhills, may encounter rapidly changing conditions.

Officials urge motorists to slow down, allow extra travel time, and check Nebraska 511 road reports before traveling Sunday as strong winds continue through the evening.
