Hastings, Nebraska – Winds ripping through south-central Nebraska Friday could top 60 mph, posing a danger to drivers and igniting near-critical fire conditions.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a High Wind Warning remains in effect today for areas north of Highway 92, where gusts could reach 60 mph. To the south, winds of 40–55 mph are expected, especially along and below Highway 6. Combined with humidity levels below 25 percent, these conditions may produce fire weather hazards Friday afternoon.

The threat eases into Saturday as winds calm and skies clear, but Hastings and surrounding counties should prepare for a quick weather shift by Sunday. A 50 percent chance of afternoon showers and breezy conditions develops Sunday, followed by likely thunderstorms Sunday night. The chance of storms continues into Monday with an 80 percent probability of rain, especially during the overnight hours.

Drivers should avoid burning, secure loose outdoor items, and limit non-essential travel on rural roads today.

Looking ahead:

  • Saturday: Sunny and calmer, high near 76°F.
  • Sunday: Showers likely in the afternoon, storms likely Sunday night.
  • Monday: Continued rain and thunderstorm risk, high near 77°F.
  • Tuesday: Cooler with a slight chance of storms, high near 62°F.
  • Wednesday: Clearer and warmer, high near 74°F.
