Norfolk, NE – Strong northwest winds are sweeping across northeast Nebraska today, with gusts reaching up to 60 mph and creating hazardous travel conditions across several counties.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, a High Wind Warning remains in effect until 6 p.m. Tuesday for Knox, Antelope, Pierce, Boone, Madison, and Platte Counties. Sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph combined with stronger gusts could lead to downed trees, power lines, and scattered outages.

The weather service warns that travel will be difficult, particularly for high-profile vehicles on open highways such as U.S. Highway 81 and Highway 275. Drivers are urged to use caution, watch for debris, and prepare for sudden crosswinds.

Residents are also advised to secure outdoor decorations, trash bins, and loose items, as flying debris could pose safety risks. Utility crews are on alert in case of power disruptions throughout the afternoon.

Winds are expected to gradually decrease after sunset, bringing some relief by late evening.
