Ogallala, Nebraska – Snow, gusty winds, and a light glaze of ice could make travel hazardous across western and north central Nebraska through early Saturday, with slick roads likely on several rural highways and interstates.

According to the National Weather Service in North Platte, a Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon CST Saturday for a large stretch of the Nebraska Panhandle and Sandhills. The advisory includes Keith, Sheridan, Garden, Grant, Hooker, Thomas, Arthur, McPherson, Deuel, Cherry, and surrounding counties, covering communities such as Ogallala, Valentine, Gordon, Oshkosh, Chappell, and Mullen.

Forecasters expect 2 to 4 inches of snow, with locally higher totals possible in parts of the Sandhills. A light glaze of ice may form at times as mixed precipitation moves through the region. Wind gusts could reach 45 mph, creating blowing snow and brief visibility reductions across open stretches of road.

Travel along Interstate 80 near Ogallala and Big Springs as well as U.S. Highway 83 near Valentine may become slick during both the Friday morning and evening travel periods.

Drivers should slow down, allow extra stopping distance, and check Nebraska 511 road conditions before traveling.

Snow and gusty winds may continue into early Saturday before conditions gradually improve later in the day as the system moves east.
