Kearney, Nebraska – Severe storms are expected to lash central and south-central Nebraska through midnight, bringing damaging winds and large hail to multiple counties under a Severe Thunderstorm Watch.

According to the National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center, the watch remains in effect until 12 a.m. CDT Monday for 17 counties, including Adams, Hall, York, and Franklin. The main threats include wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail up to 1.5 inches in diameter, and frequent lightning. Residents are urged to remain indoors during storms and secure outdoor items.

Cities like Kearney, Hastings, and Geneva could see rapid storm development this evening, with the greatest risk window between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. US-281 and I-80 travelers should monitor local alerts, as sudden downpours and debris may lead to hazardous driving conditions.

Power outages are also possible in areas like Thayer and Harlan counties. Officials recommend charging phones and avoiding travel if strong storms approach.

The watch expires at midnight, but more warnings could be issued if the storm line intensifies or lingers into early Monday. Stay tuned to local emergency management updates.
