Hastings, Nebraska – A stormy Sunday could rattle south-central Nebraska with gusty winds, isolated hail, and soaking rains threatening Memorial Day travel plans.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a strong cluster of thunderstorms is likely Sunday after 4 p.m., with the highest risk from Beaver City to Osborne along U.S. Highway 136. Localized downpours and wind gusts up to 30 mph may cause hazardous travel. Residents should avoid driving during active storms and secure outdoor items.
Thunderstorm chances ramp up again late Sunday night and linger into Memorial Day. The storms will move east-northeast across the region, bringing pockets of heavy rain. Memorial Day travelers, especially near Kearney, Grand Island, and Hastings, should expect potential delays and check conditions before heading out.
Monday’s storms could arrive early, with showers likely before 7 a.m. and a chance of additional thunderstorms throughout the day. Rain totals could range between a tenth and a quarter inch, with isolated areas seeing more.
Looking ahead, storm activity continues Tuesday with a slight chance of evening rain before a much drier pattern returns. By Wednesday and Thursday, skies clear and temperatures rebound into the low-to-mid 70s. Friday brings sunshine and near-perfect summer-like highs near 77°F.
The National Weather Service reminds residents to report hail, damaging winds, or flooding to the Hastings office. Additional alerts remain possible through midweek.
Stay alert for updated warnings through Tuesday as Nebraska heads into a potentially stormy start to summer.
