Omaha, Nebraska – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to sweep across Nebraska Wednesday evening into the overnight hours, bringing damaging winds and hail as the primary threats, with some areas facing gusts over 60 mph and hail up to an inch in diameter.

According to the National Weather Service in Omaha/Valley, the greatest threat window stretches from late Wednesday afternoon through early Thursday morning, with a Level 2 (Slight Risk) covering much of eastern Nebraska, including Omaha, Lincoln, and Columbus. Areas further east into Iowa fall under a Level 1 (Marginal Risk), still capable of producing locally severe storms.

Residents across I-80 and I-29 corridors should prepare for sudden downpours, low visibility, and potentially dangerous driving conditions. While widespread tornado activity is not expected, an isolated tornado can’t be ruled out, particularly in areas under the higher risk zone. Minor flooding is also possible in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

Officials urge Nebraskans to secure outdoor items, avoid non-essential travel during storm hours, and have multiple ways to receive warnings. If you’re planning outdoor activities Wednesday evening, stay weather-aware and monitor for updates.

Storm threats could linger into early Thursday, with additional alerts possible as new data becomes available.
