Hastings, Nebraska – Large hail, damaging wind gusts, and torrential rainfall could slam south central Nebraska this afternoon as severe storms develop and persist into the overnight hours.

According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Slight Risk (Level 2 of 5) is in effect for severe thunderstorms from 3 p.m. to 10 p.m., with a continued threat for heavy rain overnight. A secondary Slight Risk (Level 2 of 4) is also active for excessive rainfall, which could lead to localized flooding.

Cities at greatest risk include Hastings, Grand Island, and Kearney, where quarter-size hail and wind gusts up to 60–65 MPH could topple trees and power lines. Though the tornado threat remains very low, brief spin-ups can’t be ruled out in stronger cells. The heaviest rainfall could total 3 to 4 inches, especially in areas where storms repeatedly track.

Residents are urged to secure outdoor items, avoid low-lying roads, and delay non-essential travel after dark. Keep phones charged and weather alerts enabled in case flash flood warnings are issued.

Storm activity is expected to taper off by early Thursday, but additional updates or warnings may be issued if the system strengthens or stalls.
