Hastings, Nebraska – Strong to severe thunderstorms are expected to roll through central Nebraska Friday afternoon into the evening, bringing the potential for large hail and damaging winds.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, areas from Kearney to Hebron fall under a “slight risk” zone for severe weather on May 23. The most significant threats include hail up to ping pong ball size and wind gusts that could reach 60 mph. The storms are expected to develop late Friday afternoon and persist through the evening hours.
Cities like Hastings, Grand Island, Holdrege, and York are in the path of these storms. Residents should secure outdoor items, charge electronic devices, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours. While tornado and flooding risks remain low, rapid changes in storm intensity are possible.
This marks one of the season’s first widespread severe threats for central Nebraska. Drivers along I-80 and Highway 6 should use extra caution during the evening commute.
Severe weather alerts remain in effect through Friday night, with updates expected as conditions evolve.
