Hastings, Nebraska – Strong to severe thunderstorms could roll across central and northeast Nebraska Sunday afternoon, bringing the potential for large hail and damaging winds through the overnight hours.
According to the National Weather Service in Hastings, a Level 2 (Slight Risk) has been issued for much of the central part of the state, including Grand Island, Hastings, and Norfolk. The strongest storms are expected to develop after 3 p.m. Sunday and continue into the early morning hours Monday, with wind gusts over 60 mph and hail up to 1 inch possible.
Cities within the higher-risk zone, including Kearney, York, and Columbus, should monitor conditions closely. Outdoor events and travel may be impacted, especially along U.S. Highway 281 and I-80 corridors. Officials urge residents to secure loose outdoor items and remain weather-aware as storms could intensify quickly.
Residents are advised to charge devices, review emergency plans, and prepare for possible power outages. This storm system follows a quieter pattern earlier in the week, but marks a return to active spring weather.
Additional updates and warnings may be issued as the system develops. Watches could be posted Sunday morning depending on storm trends.
